Welcome to the very first episode of the Growing Great Sleepers Podcast. Today, I wanted to take just a few moments to let you get to know me.

I'm a certified pediatric sleep consultant and I'm also a pediatric nurse practitioner, though I am not currently practicing. You would think that with all my experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I would have totally rocked the newborn baby sleep thing when my first child was born, right? Well....wrong. I was in exhausted new parent land. To be honest, it was a little bit scary. I can still vividly remember waking up one night to feed my baby, sitting down on the edge of my bed fully intending to put her back in her bassine, and then the next thing I knew Iwas waking up laying on the edge of my bed with my baby in my arms. The really scary thing is I had no memory of laying down with her. Thankfully, she was safe.

That was a wake up call that I needed to change our sleep game plan. I had received my sleep consultant certification shortly before my daughter was born. Having my own child took what had been purely theoretical up until that point, and gave me real life experience by dropping me straight into the deep end. I'm really happy to be able to say that almost three years later, as of the time of this recording, my daughter has been a great sleeper for years and my younger son is a solid sleeper as well.

In addition to my own children, I've also had the joy of walking alongside many, many parents on their own journeys towards solving their child sleep struggles. Like I mentioned earlier, sleep is not just a want or luxury, it is a need. We all need sleep. We need sleep for our physical, mental and emotional well being. Many of the families I work with come to me absolutely exhausted. They have tried this and that in the past but are still struggling with sleep.

There's one nugget that I want to leave you with this week. Seeking to improve your child's sleep is not selfish. When babies don't sleep well, moms don't either, am I right? If your baby is struggling with sleep, helping him or her to get the sleep they need gives the gift of sleep to your baby for sure, but it also gives your family the gift of a well rested mom.

To wrap up this introduction to myself. I thought I'd leave you with just a few fun facts to help you get to know me a little bit!

Number one vanilla ice cream is hands down my favorite flavor of ice cream. Number two, if I had to be an animal, I would be a bird because I think flying it would just be awesome. Number three, my favorite season is spring. Number four: I don't like coffee. I really don't like it. The smell is wonderful; I could smell it all day long! But the taste... I just I can't do it!
